"A Friendly Place to Live"

The unincorporated community of Lakeside became a town site in 1886, and for decades received law enforcement services based out of the Santee Sheriff's Station. The Lakeside Sheriff's Substation was opened in May 2015 to better serve the unincorporated community of Lakeside, portions of unincorporated El Cajon, the Barona Indian Reservation, and both campuses of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. The service area covers approximately 85 square miles with the resident population approaching 80,000, and an estimated 27,000 students attending Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges.

The Barona Band of Mission Indians, who have called the area home for thousands of years, continue to be valuable community partners and an important part of the rich culture of the Lakeside area. Lakeside boasts four lakes, countless miles of hiking and equestrian trails, championship golf and the Barona Resort and Casino. Lakeside's rich equestrian history is evident in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's annual Lakeside Rodeo, and the Lakeside Western Days Parade. Lakeside's roots are firmly planted in the spirit of the "wild west."

The Lakeside Substation's 50 sworn personnel allow for proactive patrol operations, School Resource Deputies for El Capitan High School and the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, a Special Purpose Deputy assigned to the Barona Indian Reservation, Criminal Investigators, a four-deputy Crime Suppression Team and a full-time Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) clinician and deputy. Two Community Service Officers and professional support staff, aid in our sworn staff in connecting with and serving the public. Working closely with neighboring law enforcement agencies, the Lakeside and San Miguel Fire Departments and community groups, our mission is to reduce crime and the fear of crime through the use of Information-Led Policing and Community Policing, while serving the public with respect and professionalism.

Patrol

Patrol deputies are first responders. They respond to crimes or emergencies in progress and conduct routine patrols with their primary focus on the protection and preservation of life. They conduct preliminary investigations and apprehend law violators. Patrol deputies also participate in the community, while on duty, attending Neighborhood Watch meetings and making presentations to youth groups, service groups and schools.

Detectives

Detectives investigate cases involving theft, physical assaults (excluding homicides), sexual assaults, vandalism, burglaries, annoying phone calls and other crimes. Specialized investigative units such as homicide, bomb/arson, financial crimes, domestic violence, child abuse and narcotics handle specific crimes for the entire Sheriff’s jurisdiction, including the Santee Station.

Traffic

The California Highway Patrol is the agency responsible for traffic enforcement in the unincorporated areas throughout the State of California. As such, they are responsible for traffic and parking enforcement throughout all the Lakeside Substation's service area.

School Resources Deputies / Barona Special Purpose Deputy / Crime Suppression Team

There are three School Resources Deputies assigned to the Lakeside Substation. One is assigned to El Capitan High School, and two are assigned to the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. They handle all crimes that occur on campus grounds, and many crimes that have a direct nexus to their respective campus.

A Special Purpose Deputy is assigned to the Barona Indian Reservation, to act as a liaison with the Tribal Council, and to work collaboratively with Barona Tribal Enforcement to address criminal activity on the Reservation.

The Lakeside Crime Suppression Team (CST) deputies are assigned to investigate, and proactively address, quality of life issues within the community. CST deputies use a combination of Intelligence-Led Policing and Community Policing to promote collaborative relationships with community members, and to address quality interaction between law enforcement and neighborhood citizens. CST deputies also conduct directed patrols focusing on gangs, persons on parole/probation, persons with outstanding warrants, graffiti, human trafficking, habitual offenders, homeless camps, and alcohol/tobacco related crimes. CST deputies are also active within the community by attending Neighborhood Watch meetings and providing various presentations to youth groups, community groups, schools, and businesses.

Efforts to Combat Homelessness

The Lakeside Sheriff's Substation's Crime Suppression Team works hand in hand with the Sheriff's Homeless Assistance Resource Team (HART), personnel from the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), and several non-governmental organizations, to engage in proactive outreach, providing access to essential services such as housing assistance, substance abuse recovery programs, and the necessary health services to sustain the individuals of our community who are to persons experiencing homelessness. By consistent and coordinated efforts and utilizing principles of Trauma Informed Policing by local law enforcement and community members coming together, our goal is to proactively offer services to the homeless population throughout the unincorporated communities of Lakeside and El Cajon, to ensure these communities welcome and care for everyone.
