Rx Task Froce LogoThe San Diego County Sheriff's Department is a participating agency of the San Diego County Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force, a multi-agency task force created to address the issues of prescription drug abuse in San Diego County (formerly the San Diego Oxy Task Force). Together "our goal is to reduce access and increase awareness through enforcement, education, treatment, and legislative policy change."

In San Diego, among the abuse of Vicodin, Adderall, Soma, Xanax, Ambien, Codeine, Methadone and Fentanyl, OxyContin is fast becoming the drug of choice for children and young adults between the ages of 14 and 30. A significant number of young people, generally students between 17-25 years of age, are buying OxyContin from street level dealers, in the United States, Mexico and illegally over the Internet. The green 80 milligram tablet is the most popular dosage unit and is commonly sold on the street for $40-$80.
