Message from Lt. Alfred Gathings 

The Imperial Beach Sheriff's Substation provides law enforcement services for the unincorporated communities of Bonita, Lincoln Acres, and Otay.  Since 1983, it has also provided law enforcement services for the city of Imperial Beach, which is the most southwesterly city in the continental United States. Flanked by the Pacific Ocean and South San Diego Bay, the substation is nestled between miles of uncrowded beaches, big surf and wetlands teeming with wildlife. The unincorporated areas of the command cover more than 44 square miles with a population of around 23,000 residents. Incorporated on July 18, 1956, the city of Imperial Beach covers 4.4 square miles and has a population of approximately 28,000 residents. The 40 sworn personnel assigned to the substation handle more than 28,000 law enforcement incidents per year. The efforts our sworn and professional staff, as well as, those of our volunteers contributes to make the Imperial Beach one of the best tourist destinations in the county.

Responsible Retailer Program

This position, called the Responsible Retailer Program Deputy (RRP), will act as a liaison between all law enforcement personnel, the city, the retailers and community groups and will provide a conduit for all involved parties to express their concerns and/or suggestions on alcohol related topics.

Patrol

Patrol deputies respond to calls for service 24 hours a day. Each patrol deputy is assigned to a geographical “beat” area which enables the deputies to become familiar with the residents in their “beat” and with problems in the area. The “beat” system is a cornerstone of the community- oriented policing concept requiring the interaction of neighborhood residents with law enforcement. Patrol deputies also participate in the community, while on duty, attending Neighborhood Watch meetings and making presentations to youth groups, service groups and schools.

Traffic

Traffic deputies handle vehicle code enforcement, traffic collision investigations and traffic control in Imperial Beach. The California Highway Patrol is the agency responsible for traffic enforcement in the unincorporated areas throughout the County.

Detectives

Detectives investigate cases involving theft, physical assaults (excluding homicides), sexual assaults, vandalism, burglaries, annoying phone calls and other crimes. Specialized investigative units such as homicide, bomb/arson, financial crimes, domestic violence, child abuse and narcotics handle specific crimes for the entire Sheriff’s jurisdiction, including the Imperial Beach Station.

Senior Volunteers

The Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer Patrol program is designed to draw upon the experience of senior citizens from our community. The men and women participating in the Imperial Beach Substation’s program provide valuable assistance to existing staff as it strives to increase the quality of life in the community.

These dedicated volunteers provide many valuable services to our community including:

• Home vacation security checks
• Visit the homebound (You Are Not Alone – YANA)
• Enforce handicapped parking regulations
• Patrol in marked SVP vehicles
• Assist Crime Prevention with public presentations
• Conduct residential and business security surveys
• Abandoned Vehicle Abatement

Volunteers undergo a background check, receive training to perform their duties, and are asked to work a minimum of six hours per week. Volunteers are always needed. If interested, please contact (619) 498-2400.
