In December 1980, The City of Poway was incorporated and began contracting Law Enforcement Services with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. The Poway Sheriff's Station provides patrol, traffic and investigative services to approximately 50,000 residents in a 48 square mile area.

The Poway Station fields 45 sworn personnel and 6 civilians for the residents of Poway. In addition to the sworn and professional staff, there are 13 reserve deputies and 48 Senior Volunteer Patrol members attached to the station.

Poway is a diverse community that prides itself on their motto, “The City in the Country” and by consistently having one of the lowest crime rates in San Diego County and the entire State of California. Though primarily a residential community, Poway also boasts a large aerospace and business manufacturing district, including defense giant General Atomics and the regional headquarters of GEICO insurance. All told, the Poway Business Park employs approximately 20,000 people.

Located in northeast San Diego County with a population of approximately 50,000 residents, Poway prides itself on the fact that more than half of the city’s 40 square-mile area is preserved as dedicated open space.

Patrol / COPPS

Patrol deputies respond to calls for service 24 hours a day. Each patrol deputy is assigned to a geographical “beat” area which enables the deputies to become familiar with the residents and problems in the area. All patrol deputies are trained in the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) philosophy requiring the interaction of neighborhood residents with law enforcement. Proactive law enforcement is essential for suppressing drug activity, burglaries and gang development in the community. Patrol deputies are also active in the community during their shift, attending Neighborhood Watch meetings, and making various presentations to youth groups, service groups and schools.

Detectives / School Resource Officers

Detectives investigate cases involving theft, physical assaults (excluding homicides), sexual assaults, vandalism, burglaries, annoying phone calls and other crimes. Specialized investigative units such as homicide, bomb/arson, financial crimes, domestic violence, child abuse and narcotics handle those specific crimes for the entire Sheriff's jurisdiction, including the City of Poway.

The Detective Division is responsible for investigating all general crime cases and arrests made by patrol deputies. If the detective assigned to the case determines that there is enough evidence to prove a specific person or persons committed a crime, the case will be forwarded to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. The DA's office will review the case and determine if the case is suitable for criminal prosecution.

School Resource Officers handle all crimes relating to students at the middle and high school levels in the area serviced by the Poway Sheriff's Station. These crimes include truancy, tobacco, drug and alcohol related offenses as well as other crimes that occur on school grounds.

Senior Volunteers

The Sheriff's Senior Volunteer Patrol is designed to draw upon the experience of senior citizens from our community. The men and women participating in the Poway Station's program provide valuable assistance to existing staff as it strives to increase the quality of life in the community. These dedicated volunteers provide many valuable services to the community including:

• Home vacation security checks
• Visit the homebound (You Are Not Alone - YANA)
• Enforce handicapped parking regulations
• Abandoned Vehicle Abatement
• Patrol in marked SVP vehicles
• Child ID Fingerprinting

Volunteers undergo a background check, receive training to perform their duties, and are asked to work a minimum of six hours per week. Volunteers are always in need. If interested, contact the Sheriff's Senior Volunteer Patrol at (858) 232-8000.
