On February 4, 2024, around 12 p.m., Sheriff's Homicide investigators were notified a 54-year-old male in Sheriff's custody, passed away at the San Diego Central Jail. The male's name is not being released at this time because we are actively trying to locate and notify his family. A Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of a loved one.
On February 4, 2024, around 10:00 a.m., a deputy and nurse were handing out medication to the housing module. When they contacted the male in his housing unit, they identified that he needed further medical evaluation. While being taken for that evaluation, the male became unresponsive and rescue efforts were immediately administered. Paramedics were called and responded, taking over immediate medical care. While first responders provided lifesaving support, the male was transported to the hospital. Despite all efforts, he succumbed and unfortunately passed away despite all attempts to save him.
The male was taken into custody on June 26, 2023, on felony warrants. The warrants were stemming from an October 2021 arrest by the San Diego Police Department for Felony Vandalism. At the time of his arrest, the male was believed to be unsheltered.
The Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) representative was notified of this incident. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and will conduct a thorough investigation. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.

El 4 de febrero de 2024, alrededor de las 10:00 a.m., un oficial y una enfermera estaban entregando medicamentos al módulo de vivienda. Cuando se pusieron en contacto con el hombre en su unidad de vivienda, identificaron que necesitaba una evaluación médica adicional. Mientras era llevado para esa evaluación, el macho quedó inconsciente y los esfuerzos de rescate se administraron de inmediato. Se llamó a los paramédicos y respondieron, haciéndose cargo de la atención médica inmediata. Mientras los socorristas brindaban apoyo para salvarle la vida, el hombre fue transportado al hospital. El hombre fue detenido el 26 de junio de 2023 con órdenes de arresto por delitos graves. Las órdenes de arresto se derivaron de un arresto en octubre de 2021 por parte del Departamento de Policía de San Diego por delito grave de vandalismo. En el momento de su detención, se creía que el hombre no estaba protegido.
El representante de la Junta Ciudadana de Revisión de la Aplicación de la Ley (CLERB, por sus siglas en inglés) fue notificado de este incidente. La Oficina del Médico Forense determinará la causa y la forma de la muerte.
Como es el protocolo para todas las muertes bajo custodia, la Unidad de Homicidios del Alguacil respondió y llevará a cabo una investigación exhaustiva. La causa y la forma de la muerte serán determinadas por la Oficina del Médico Forense.
