Hate crimes attack the basic values of American society by targeting the right of every individual to live safely and freely. Therefore, the San Diego Sheriff's Department makes hate crime threats a priority in its investigative and crime prevention efforts. Hate Crime Statistics

On April 23, 1990, Congress passed the Hate Crime Statistics Act, 28 U.S.C. § 534, which required the Attorney General to collect data “about crimes that manifest evidence of prejudice based on race, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.”
